The "Big Girl Bed" milestone

On Wednesday, Abby slept in her "Big Girl Bed" for the first time. This is quite a milestone at our house. We haven't been much for letting go of things that make our little girl not a baby. It was hard to get rid of the bottles, binkies, and even the bassinet in our room. Even though we knew that this was a necessary milestone, it was hard to take her out of the safety of her crib. Ned was out of town and so I got to brave this one by myself. This was probably for the best considering I knew I would have to lay by her, read her books in her bed and go in there when she woke up. According to Abby, it was pretty much up to me. We decided to get her just the mattress and box springs right now. We got her the smaller box springs to minimize the height from which she could fall, if she were to fall. We also decided to put the mattress and box springs directly on the floor, also to help with the height.
So far she has loved her bed and I think she is warming up to idea that the new baby will sleep in her little girl bed.

A few Abby quotes regarding the big girl bed:
  • She looked around her newly arranged room and said, "Mom, I can't find anything."
  • The morning after sleeping in the bed for the first time, "I have a big girl bed. Where is my little bed? I need to see it."
  • Trying to go to sleep every night,"Mom, will you lay with me?"
  • When I tried to leave thinking she was asleep, "Mom, where are you going?" I lied, "To the bathroom." When I tried to leave again, "Mom, do you have to go to the bathroom again?" Needless to say, I stayed there until morning.
