Every Christmas we get out the tree, the porcelain village, the outdoor lights, and the rest of the decorations, and somehow they all have to be plugged in. We end up running extension cords from place to place, up walls, behind couches and everywhere else we can find. I absolutely hate having cords in plain sight. It is totally tacky and stupid. Unfortunately, when we bought our "charming older home" the realtor didn't say, "Hey, and by the way, you won't be able to plug anything in because the outlets are not grounded, some are controlled by switches you won't find, and there aren't enough AMPS running into your home to run a vacuum." This information would have been helpful (especially the part where there isn't an outlet in one of my bathrooms. I had to run an extension cord to blow dry my hair!).
This year, our items that require power have nearly doubled in size. I don't remember buying anything new, however I am still scrambling to locate extension cords. This year Ned and I have made three different trips to various stores to purchase new extension cords. We have a vast assortment from 6 feet to 50 feet. I am not so sure what the 50 foot one is for. We have plug converters that allow three pronged plugs to work in a two pronged outlet, power strips and the whole bit. We have cords EVERYWHERE! I have never seen such a random mess of electrical power hidden all over a persons house before!
Who does this you may ask? Well I'll tell you. It's the crazy people that want their Christmas tree and porcelain village to light up dang it. As a safety note, Abby cannot get to or strangle herself on any of these cords, I am really good at hiding them. I have also figured out how to run my entire living room from one switch. All the lamps, tree and village light up with one flip of the switch. I'm a freaking genius! A genius who is going to blow a fuse in the breaker box for sure.
Also, it is officially December and I just realized that my calender that hangs right by the back door, is still on October. If I missed anything important in November that is why. Oops I should go change that.

That is awesome, I know how you feel and I have a newer home. You just can't think of everything when you decide were the plugs should go. I remember our first house. You couldn't run the dishwasher and the washing machine at the same time or BLACK OUT! When you buy older you always are getting suprised, isn't that the fun?
I am glad I am not the only one who feels like I completely missed November. I
You crack me up. I love your blog. It always makes me laugh. Way to go genius!!
Older homes are the worst about that. I bet your house looks great-it is so cute even when it is not christmas. I hate cords too and luckily this year I was able to get away without them. We miss Abby, tell her we said hi!!
I'm sure it looks amazing in the dark.
I think you have probably earned a day out getting pedicures. You'll have to come over to our house and help us out with our lights.
Melanie you are so good at writing. I love reading your posts, they are so entertaining. That is funny about all of your cords, you ARE a genius. I am like you though, I can't go without one of my decorations not lighting up, everything creates such a warm ambiance. Abby will look back and appreciate all of the work you went through to get that dang tree and village to light up;)
